A Joyful Homecoming:
Dr. Simon and Mrs. Simon Chan Return to the Cathedral of the King
The Cathedral of the King was greatly blessed to welcome Dr. Simon Chan and Mrs. Simon Chan during the celebration of the Holy Mass on Sunday, June 14, 2026.
For many in the COTK community, the Chans are not merely visiting guests but cherished members of the Cathedral family. Their relationship with the church spans many years, dating back to their earlier visits around 2008 and 2009. During those years, they contributed significantly to the musical life of the Cathedral, introducing hymns and songs that have since become beloved staples of the congregation's worship. Among these are "Declare His Glory", "Oh the Mercy of God", and "Thou Art Our Rock", along with many other hymns that continue to be sung and treasured to this day. Though based in Singapore and actively engaged in missionary work throughout the region, the Chans have maintained a special bond with the Cathedral of the King. Their recent visit was therefore not simply a return visit, but a joyful homecoming among brothers and sisters in Christ.
During the Holy Mass, Mrs. Chan ministered to the congregation through a moving rendition of “What Shall I Give Thee, Master?” Through her artistry, vocal discipline, and heartfelt devotion, she transformed musical excellence into an offering of worship, drawing the congregation into deeper reflection on wholehearted service and gratitude to God.
The blessings of her visit extended beyond the liturgy. Following the Mass, Mrs. Chan generously dedicated an hour and a half to a vocal workshop with the Cathedral Choir. Returning to the fundamentals of healthy singing, she guided choristers through essential principles of breath support, vocal placement, tone production, and vocal technique. Emphasizing the importance of building a strong foundation, she lovingly led the choir back to basics while encouraging each member to cultivate their God-given gifts with excellence and purpose.
Mrs. Chan serves as Voice Teacher and Choir Director at Trinity Theological College, Singapore. She also regularly conducts the choirs of Prinsep Street Presbyterian Church and Barker Road Methodist Church, while continuing her ministry as an itinerant missionary and choir consultant. Drawing from her wealth of experience in church music and choral ministry, she freely shared practical knowledge, valuable insights, and enduring wisdom that will continue to benefit the Cathedral Choir long after her visit.
Above all, the Cathedral family gives thanks and glory to Almighty God for the gift of fellowship and for the privilege of receiving the ministry of Dr. and Mrs. Chan once again. Their visit was a beautiful reminder that the Body of Christ extends beyond geographical boundaries, united in worship, service, and a shared love for the Lord Jesus Christ.
The Cathedral of the King also expresses its heartfelt gratitude to Mrs. Chan for her generosity, humility, and unwavering love for church music. Through her teaching, encouragement, and mentorship, she imparted not only technical knowledge but also God-given wisdom that inspires singers and musicians to steward their gifts faithfully for His glory. Her willingness to invest her time, expertise, and experience into the life of the Cathedral Choir was a profound blessing and a tangible expression of Christian love and service.
As Mrs. Chan shared her hope of returning to the Cathedral sometime during the first quarter of 2027, the congregation and choir alike look forward with joyful anticipation to welcoming her once again—not simply as a guest, but as family.
To God be all glory for a grace-filled day of worship, fellowship, learning, and renewed friendship in Christ.
