Tuesday, January 19: “True Speech”

Ephesians 4: 29: “Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, that it may give grace to those who hear.” In 1939 Rhett Butler told Scarlett O’Hara “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn” on the silver screen, and a nation was scandalized. Today? We’ve come a long way, baby! Today the ‘D’ word, the ‘B’ word, and especially the ‘F’ word, are not just common, in many cases and places they are oppressively rampant, as in, every-sentence rampant. Do these words build anyone up, or give anyone grace? What’s next? More importantly, what or who will turn the tide?
