“Not the Most Likely Candidate”

Hebrews 5: 5-6: “So also Christ did not glorify Himself so as to become a high priest, but He Who said to Him, ‘You are My Son, today I have begotten You’; just as He says in another passage, ‘You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek.’” Of all the prophetic writers, the one who best understood the ascended high priesthood of Christ was not one of the heavyweights like Isaiah or Daniel. It was the former shepherd boy David, not even one in the priestly lineage, who saw in Psalms like 2, 8, 24, 68, and 110 the ascension and glorification of his descendant, the priest in the order of Melchizedek rather than Aaron. After all, David is the Old Testament writer most quoted in the New Testament; by Paul, Peter, John, even Jesus.
