“Fair Weather Friend”

Acts 27: 12: “And because the harbor was not suitable for wintering, the majority reached a decision to put out to sea from there, if somehow they could reach Phoenix, a harbor of Crete, facing southwest and northwest, and spend the winter there.” The harbor to which St. Paul’s ship had come was called ‘Fair Havens,’ and it was aptly named, for it was a haven only in fair weather. Because of its shallow depth and exposure to winter storms, ships trying to stay there during stormy times often sank in their moorings. This is another metaphorical passage similar to what we saw in Psalm 1: Let your life be situated in God’s love and you will be a safe haven for many, 24/7.
