“What’s Important to You”

Matthew 6: 24: “You cannot serve God and mammon.” I had an eye-opening experience on a recent shopping errand. The mall was having one of its “big sales” (always during payday weekends) and the line at every checkout counter was more than a hundred meters long - and there were a lot of counters. Each person was waiting literally for hours to complete their purchases and pay for their carts loaded with goods, and seemed happy to do so. I wondered: if anyone had to wait in a line that long to receive their Eucharist in the Mass they attended that morning, would they do it? Or would they just pass up on the opportunity to receive the means of grace? Have things become more important that God to us?
