“Status Quo”

1 Corinthians 7: 24:  “Let each man remain with God in that condition in which he was called.”  Especially here in Lent, we may not use this verse to excuse lack of growing in the Lord.  Some would like to come to Jesus “Just as I am”, and stay “just as they are” for the rest of their lives, instead of growing “from glory to glory” (2 Corinthians 3: 18).  That’s not what this verse means.  No, St. Paul is concluding here his point that he began with verse ten, about believers not taking the right to divorce unbelieving spouses.  It might not be easy, but it is not our calling to shy away from every unbeliever in the world as if we lived in a giant monastery; for if we do that, who will evangelize them?  No, as he says in v. 12, “If any brother has a wife who is an unbeliever, and she consents to live with him, let him not send her away.”  Stay in that condition - that marital status - in which you were when you came to the Lord.  And work in that field.
