“Empty Boast”

Ecclesiastes 2: 9: “Then I became great and increased more than all who proceeded me in Jerusalem.” This sounds very impressive, until you realize that “all who proceeded me in Jerusalem” included exactly three people: Solomon’s pop and two of his brothers, neither one of whom were anything to brag about, throne-snatchers that they were. If you are going to compare yourself against someone in a proud way, use someone better than the likes of the vain Absalom (2 Samuel 18: 18) and the cowardly Adonijah (1 Kings 1: 50).
