“Famous Thong”

John 1: 27: “It is He Who comes after Me, the thong of Whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.” There aren’t that many statements quoted in all four Gospels, but this lowly thong is the subject of one of them. (Matthew 3: 11; Mark 1: 7; Luke 3: 16) It is included to show the humility of John, for a sandal thong was one of the dirtiest, most unsanitary things on the planet at that time. Constantly immersed in the mud, blood, and animal excrement of the typical first century roadway, it certainly expunged shoe removal from the list of most coveted careers, yet for John, even the sandal thong of Jesus was holy. That’s humility!
