“Proud Apostle”

Luke 22: 32, 33: “Peter said to Jesus, ‘Lord, with you I am ready to go both to prison and to death.’ And Jesus said, ‘I say to you, Peter, the cock will not crow today until you have denied three times that you know me.’” After confronting all the apostles with their lack of an understanding of servanthood, Jesus zeroes in particularly on Simon Peter. Wow, what a way to treat a guy during Passover night, the highest feast of the year! Again, Jesus did it out of love. It was Peter’s tears upon hearing the crow of the rooster later that morning that washed his eyes so that he could see his pride, and enable him to become the leader of the early Church. Like every reading in this week’s Daily Office, we see how God, in His compassion, breaks our pride so we can be taught and restored unto Him.
