“Please Pass the Salt”
Matthew 5: 13: “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how will it be made salty again? It is good for nothing anymore, except to be thrown out and be trampled underfoot by men.” Salt doesn’t live unto itself. Its sole purpose is to make other things better, and lose its own identity in the process. It makes food taste better, it preserves meat and cheese, it makes streets less icy and thus safer, and the list goes on. But if it ever becomes about the salt, the whole benefit is ruined. Jesus said we are to be like that: to be ground up and shaken, to lose ourselves in the service of others. Is your life about you being the salt, or about you making others better, no matter the cost?
