“Pronoun Jamboree”

Micah 7: 18-20: “Who is a God like You, who pardons iniquity and passes over the rebellious act of the remnant of His possession? He does not retain His anger forever, because He delights in unchanging love. He will again have compassion on us; He will tread our iniquities underfoot. Yes, You will cast all their sins into the depth of the sea. You will give truth to Jacob and unchanging love to Abraham, which You swore to our forefathers from days of old.” In writing about God, Israel, and their rebellious sin, Micah uses alternately the second person and third person for God, and both the first person plural and third person for Israel. Why the bad grammar? Perhaps to highlight the all-encompassing nature of both God and His forgiveness. At the end of a tough and confrontational week in the MDR, it’s a nice note to finish on! Read the verses again and be awed by God’s mercy.
