Day 57: Spiritual Food in Quarantine
In My Father’s house are many dwelling places.
Some Bible versions render “dwelling places” as “mansions” in John 14. And so some Christians hope to obtain what they think is a physical mansion in a geographical heaven. What Jesus means by this is there is room for everyone in the household of God. We, though estranged by sin, can come back to Him who is waiting with open arms. Jesus uses location as a symbol for relationship. A prayer composed by a priest in our Cathedral parish calls God “our dwelling place in all generations” because home is not a building but the fellowship we have with Him. Jesus is the Preparer and Builder of that home. We’re not gold-diggers interested in the wealth of a spouse, we’re a bride seeking the love of our groom. Planning for a physical place to live in is important, but an engaged couple in love looks forward more to being together than where they will be together. Let’s long for our Bridegroom, not His bank account.
