“Do you suppose that I came to bring peace on earth? I tell you, no, but rather division.” (Luke 12:51)
Jesus sometimes used hyperbolic language to emphasize a point. He is the Prince of Peace and the source of unity. So what did He mean He didn’t come to bring peace on earth but division instead? He obviously meant some would initially react adversely to His mission. He was the Light that came into the world and exposed its current condition. Some received Him; some didn’t. That’s also why He said many were taking the broad way to destruction and few were walking the narrow road to life. He came to change that status quo.
Jesus is the Light that enlightens every man. That process takes time. But as the rain and snow come down from heaven and do not return without watering the earth and making it sprout and grow, so will He, the Word of God, not return to Him without accomplishing His purpose. So that one day, every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus is Lord to the glory of the Father. We are beneficiaries of that process and are invited to be part of it for the sake of others.
