Friday, August 11: “Courage by Trial, not Courage by Denial”
Psalm 91: 5, 6: “You will not be afraid of the terror by night, or of the arrow that flies by day; of the pestilence that stalks in darkness, or of the destruction that lays waste at noon.”
It is easy to achieve courage by denial: “There is no terror by night. There is no arrow. There is no pestilence. There is no destruction.” But not really, because that is a pseudo-courage that melts like an ice cube on a sand dune when faced with the truth. No, real courage comes to the one who knows that he is dwelling with the Most High, the Almighty, the Lord God, and abides in the shelter and shadow of his Refuge and Fortress. If you want real courage, you have to begin with trust in God (v. 1, 2).
