Friday, June 14: “Forgiven, not Excused Part VI”
Matthew 16: 27: “For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of the Father with His angels, and will then repay every man according to his deeds.”
We cannot simply sweep the issue of recompense according to deeds under the rug of “That’s David, that’s Old Testament”; for the words you just read come from the mouth of Jesus Christ Himself, who joins with many biblical writers in expressing this principle–many times. Even in today’s Epistle reading, St. Paul says, “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, he will also reap.” (Galatians 6: 7-9) This, from the very man who taught the Church most of what we understand about mercy, grace, and eternal life. ‘Nuff said.
