Whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner shall be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord. (1 Corinthians 11:27)
"In an unworthy manner" in this passage means committing the sin of doing the opposite of what the Lord's Supper proclaims. Paul says that as often as we eat the bread and drink the cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death. That death made all men, Jew or Gentile, one. The attitude of the Corinthians is divisive and inconsiderate of others. In doing so, they bring judgment upon themselves, resulting in sickness and even death.
Before we go to the Lord's table the next time, let us, as Paul encourages, examine ourselves and guard our hearts from any animosity or discrimination against our brothers with whom Jesus made us one. And instead of judgment, experience the joy unity with God's family brings.
