May 4, 2024 Daily Dose of Discernment

“Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.” (Matthew 7:13-14)

It is unfortunate that these words of Jesus are mistaken for a prophecy of the eternal fate of people. According to that wrong interpretation, a future judgment day will come at the end of time, on which a large majority of humanity who ever lived will be sentenced to unimaginable, unending suffering and a chosen few will enter into everlasting joy. But the Lord is merely describing the situation of a time when people had not heard of the narrow way that leads to life.

The good news is that God is not willing for any to perish but that all would come to repentance and follow His way that leads to fullness of life. We who have so far discovered it are to show it to those who haven’t. Our hope, and goal, is to reverse the trend of two thousand years ago so that one day, every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus, who is that very Way, is Lord, and will walk the way of God’s kingdom rather than that which leads to destruction.
