Monday, March 3: “Why Lent? Part II”

Hebrews 1: 8, 9: “Of the Son He says, ‘Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, and the righteous scepter is the scepter of His Kingdom. You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; therefore God, Your God, has anointed You with the oil of gladness above Your companions.’”

For centuries, readers of Psalm 45 thought verses six and seven therein were speaking of two different entities, God and the King. Then the writer of Hebrews comes along and says that both verses concern the Son, the Second Person of the Trinity. This helps us to see how there can be both the one God of Deuteronomy 6: 4 and the only begotten God of John 1: 18. Challenging to our understanding? This is why we need Lent.
