Monday, October 23: “Fret Not over the Misdirected”

Matthew 11: 16, 17: “But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces, who call out to the other children, and say, ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.’”

What Jesus accuses His generation of seems innocuous: complaining to their peers that they only want to play by their own rules, and never try anything different. But they are not complaining to their peers; they are complaining to God’s spokesmen, and by extension, to God (Matthew 10: 40). Is our own generation any different? Have we learned to follow God in everything, or do we still insist on taking the lead from time to time (or always)? If we’re wise we’ll let the Lord pick the playlist, do the fluting, and decide the tempo of the moment.
