“The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.” (1 Corinthians 10:7)
Paul warns the readers of his epistle not to commit the same error as the Israelites of old did. He equates their forefathers’ passage through the Red Sea to baptism and relates how they all ate the same spiritual food and drank the same spiritual drink from the rock which was Christ. Then he quotes the scripture that says that in the desert, they “sat down to eat and drink, and stood up to play.”
This warning is also for us today who have been baptized into Christ and His Church and partake of the spiritual food of His body and blood. If we do that and then engage in sensuality and selfish lusts, we are cruising for a bruising. We will be inviting trouble and will suffer consequences because of our own actions and for which we cannot blame God or His wrath. The sacraments are means of grace, not a license to overindulge. Let us take heed.
