“Grant that we may sit, one on Your right and one on Your left, in Your glory.” (Mark 10:37)
What James and John apparently mean by glory is Jesus assuming imperial power after overthrowing Rome. When that happens, they want to be seated on either side of Him, enjoying the choicest posts in His government.
God’s glory is always to have mercy. It is ultimately manifested in the offering of one's life for the sake of unworthy beneficiaries, which is what the cross is. Whoever is willing to share in Jesus' sacrifice, by likewise denying themselves, taking up their crosses, and following Him, manifests this divine glory and sits beside Him. And there aren't only two seats in those places; there are as many as there are mansions. Although they've been prepared beforehand, they're not His to give but ours to occupy.
