If one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it. (1 Corinthians 12:26)
Have you ever stubbed a toe? Do you remember how the message of distress was sent from that tiny digit to the rest of your body faster than the speed of light, and how you curled up in agony like a worm after a pesky little boy sprinkles salt on it?
“Sakit ng kalingkingan, sakit ng buong katawan” goes the Tagalog saying. It sums up what Paul explains about each member of the one body being part of the Head and of each other. So that if one suffers, all suffer with it; and if one gets the glory, the rest share in its joy. But Paul is really speaking of the Body of Christ, the Church Catholic. As its members, through our committed and active participation in the local parish God placed us in, we are one with the rest of our brothers and sisters in His household. We should rejoice with those of them who rejoice and we weep with those who weep. And individually we should think, “Their health is my health, their safety is my safety, their protection is my protection, and it is in my best interest that I seek their good because it is mine as well.”
May we have a sense of what Jesus did on the cross on our behalf - make us one - and actualize our unity, with Him and with each other.
