Saturday, June 8: “One Body”

Galatians 3: 28: “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”

There is no better venue where this oneness of the Body of Christ can be manifested than at the Eucharistic altar. The pauper receives the same gift as the tycoon; the life-long Christian partakes of the same feast as the newly-converted, formerly notorious sinner; each gender receives equally from the bountiful hand of God. Never do some nibble on crumbs while others gorge on an entire loaf. This is why Paul was so upset with Peter in Wednesday’s reading. The Eucharist is the great equalizer in the Church, a profession and preserver of our unity.
