“If anyone wants to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all.” (Mark 9:35)
Jesus told His disciples three times that He was to suffer and die in the hands men and rise three days later. Two of those three times, after hearing it, they argued who was the greatest among them. He addressed their un-kingdomlike attitude and said that he who wishes to be first should be the servant of all.
The Greek word for “servant” is “diakonos.” It means table-server and one who does menial work. It’s where the word “deacon” comes from. Only in realizing who we are in Christ, the epitome of servanthood, will we be secure in serving those considered least important. And lifting them up bespeaks confidence and strength.
