Thursday, August 17: “Rome to the Rescue”
Acts 21: 30-32: “Then all the city was provoked, and the city rushed together, and taking hold of Paul they dragged him out of the temple, and immediately the doors were shut. While they were seeking to kill him, a report came up to the commander of the Roman cohort that all Jerusalem was in confusion. At once he took along some soldiers and centurions and ran down to them; and when they saw the commander and the soldiers, they stopped beating Paul.”
The scheme of the Jerusalem Church to help Paul escape persecution from the Jews has failed. Now the Jew’s scheme to kill Paul has failed, stopped by the ruler of all the Roman military forces in Jerusalem. Why? Because God Himself has a scheme: to get Paul to Rome alive, so he can witness to many there, including Caesar (Acts 27: 24). And if He has to use Claudius Lysius (Acts 23: 26), this unsung Roman hero, to get the job done, so be it.
