Deuteronomy 7: 9:“Know therefore that the Lord your God, He is God, the faithful God, Who keeps His covenant and His lovingkindness to a thousandth generation with those who love Him and keep His commandments.” Biblically, one generation is counted as forty years, the amount of time between a man’s birth and the raising of his children to adulthood, who can then begin their own families (or, in some cases, the age when he himself begins his family). That’s 40, 000 years of faithfulness (and biblical history only covers about 6000 years). But at a deeper level, one thousand is symbolic of eternity. An everlasting Covenant with an eternally faithful God is one of the things to rediscover in Lent.
