Thursday, January 28: “Meekness as Empathy”

Mark 6: 35, 36: “And when it was already quite late, His disciples came up to Him and began saying, ‘The place is desolate and it is already quite late; send them away so that they may go into the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.‘” Have you ever noticed how many times Jesus was advised to “send away” or ignore the weak and vulnerable? The blind (Matthew 20: 21), the children (Mark 10: 13), the mother of a possessed girl (Matthew 15: 23), and here, those facing a long, dangerous journey on empty stomachs. Thanks be to God, Jesus never heeded such advice. Meekness embraces the vulnerable, and gives them strength to endure and overcome.
