Tuesday, August 22: “No Grudge, Son”

2 Samuel 18: 12, 14: “‘In our hearing the king charged you and Abishai and Ittai, saying, “Protect for me the young man Absalom!”’ …

Then Joab said, ‘I will not waste time here with you.’ So he took three spears in his hand and thrust them through the heart of Absalom while he was yet alive in the midst of the oak.” Even after all the evil Absalom had done against his father, David still had a heart for his son. Joab’s own insecure heart (Really, Joab? THREE spears? TEN armor bearers? v. 15) couldn’t handle that, to the point that he felt that he must disobey David’s order to protect Absalom and trust the king to keep the personal vow between them (1 Chronicles 11: 6) Perhaps, but he and David’s son Solomon had no such vow. (1 Kings 2: 5, 6) Big mistake, Joab!
