Tuesday, February 9: “Of Worms and Fire”

Mark 9: 48: “Where their worm does not die, and their fire is not quenched.” Jesus thrice quotes here the last verse of the book of Isaiah, which talks about the eternal glory of the repentant and the judgment of those who refuse. Worms and fire both speak of consumption and decay, rather than renewal; to live such a life on earth is to completely miss our purpose here. Will a life lived in perpetual regression from the character of God be happy in a Kingdom where everyone dwells in love of God and each other, rather than a constant focus on self? No, and without repentance, worm and fire will be their eternity.
