Tuesday, June 6: “Crusin’ thru 2 Cor, Part VIII”

2 Corinthians 6: 14: “Do not be bound together with unbelievers; for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship has light with darkness?” This scripture has always been interpreted as speaking against mixed marriages–Christians coupled with non-Christians. Yes, but it goes deeper. The Greek term translated here ‘bound together’ literally reads ‘unequally yoked’, which refers to a pair of oxen bound by a yoke for work, yet they are mismatched so that one wants to go one way, and the other, another way. Inefficiency is the inevitable result. A team is only effective if all members have the same goal, the same aim. This principle is true in marriage, business–everything. When we bind ourselves to anyone for any endeavor, it must be based on common goals, not our own affections (v. 12).
