Liturgy

LITURGY

In the Charismatic Episcopal Church we embrace the three streams of Charismatic, Evangelical and Sacramental Worship.  Our worship services, especially on Sunday, reflects all these three elements.

"The Eucharist" (meaning Thanksgiving) refers to the celebration of the Lord's Supper, a Sacrament instituted by Jesus on the night before His crucifixion which culminates in the receiving of His Body and Blood.  Just as the Lord fed the Israelites with daily manna from Heaven, miraculous food which gave them supernatural nourishment for their journey to the Promised Land, He feeds His people today with spiritual food, empowering us with His grace for our life's journey from glory to glory.  We affirm the presence of the Lord Jesus among us as we His people gather at His Table.

The form or shape of the ceremony in which this takes place is called "The Liturgy" (meaning the work of the people).  Every Church has a Liturgy, although not all of them include a celebration of the Eucharist.  Our Liturgy in the CEC is provided by the Patriarch's Council in a book called the Sacramentary.  It includes a Lectionary (a prescribed set of Scripture readings for each Sunday of a three-year cycle, along with other readings for other Holy Days and celebrations), prayers, creeds, and other elements that have been in the traditional Church's Liturgy for many centuries.  These elements usually conform to a shape which is also ancient and universal.  However, within the Liturgy, Charismatic and Evangelical expression is also encouraged and expected.  Just as the Host at the Eucharistic Table is Jesus Christ, the Presider of the Liturgy is the Holy Spirit.

Within the Sacramentary there are numerous options which can be chosen to fit the season, occasion, and level of solemnity of a particular celebration. There is freedom within its order, so that worshipers need not run into the danger of being stifled by the letter of the law.  The goal is always to lead each participant of each service into a real encounter with the risen Christ.

USHERING

The main responsibility of ushers is to maintain order primarily during worship services and other Church activities for that matter.  They make sure that reverence is observed by the people inside the Sanctuary.  Ushers are also the extension of the Archbishop where gathering and welcoming the congregation during services is concerned.  They make people feel welcomed as they enter the Church and readily assist them for any concerns.  They are also a willing hand of support to any work assignments as may be given to them by the Church leadership.

PRE-SERVICE RESPONSIBILITIES

They ensure that chairs are properly arranged and aligned prior to the start of any Church activity.  Customaries, offering envelopes, and other printed materials are checked and prepared for distribution to the congregation.

Though there is an assigned community that cleans the Church a day before the Sunday Eucharist, the ushers oversees anything that may have been inadvertently left out by the group that cleaned the day before.  They make sure that all passageways are free from litter.

DURING SERVICE RESPONSIBILITIES

As people enter the Church, they are reminded by the ushers to turn off their mobile phones and other similar communication gadgets.  Unnecessary movements and noise are monitored and attended immediately.  Restless children are escorted to the Narthex until they are ready to join the congregation again.  At certain portions of the Liturgy, going in and out of the Sanctuary are discouraged.  Movements if any are kept to a minimum.

Ushers also man the Narthex Area while the Mass is on-going; they make sure that children do not make it as a playing area, and at the same time encourage “overstaying” people at the Narthex to go back in.  They are also on the look out for new faces in the congregation and keeps count of the attendance every time Eucharist is celebrated.

POST-SERVICE RESPONSIBILITIES

It is during dismissal of the congregation that some ushers take time in handling Bible stories for children and other printed materials for the people to take home, while others collate the Customaries to be used for next Sunday.  The inserts in the Customaries are then taken out for preparation for next week’s use.

After the people have left their seats, ushers scan the area for left-behind things and litter.  Lost and found items are turned over to the guard on duty for safe-keeping until retrieved.

Ushers are also advised to be the last group to leave the premises after any Church activities to ensure that the congregation area is set and ready for the next day’s use.

AUXILLARY

The AUXILIARY consists of the Audio, Video, Visual Aids and Prints. Though “behind the scene”, this group of men and women plays a significant role in the ministry as they “intensify” the message delivered from the altar. So much preparation (not just physical but more so spiritual) takes place prior to the actual event making sure that everything is in order.

They have even conquered the social media airwaves as they make use of LIVE FEEDS during Sunday Masses and Wednesday Fellowships. Amazing how the Cathedral of the King have reached out to those beyond reach – those on-board a ship, those outside the country, those who can’t make it to church because of sickness or are challenged physically.  We are now boundless! And it has touched so many lives that we never thought could happen. We are reaching new audiences with new ways!

And all these tasks working harmoniously achieve effective ministry. All glory belongs to the Most High God!
