“Ruddy Boy”

1 Samuel 16: 12: “So Jesse sent and brought David in. Now he was ruddy, with beautiful eyes and a handsome appearance. And the Lord said, “Arise, anoint him, for this is he.’” Remember back on June 28, when we saw Saul was the tallest, most handsome man around? The best thing they could say about David is that he was ruddy. I honestly don’t know what that means. If someone called me ruddy I wouldn’t know whether to slap him or thank him. There’s a vague connotation of something positive, but … The point is, appearance wasn’t the criteria for success as king; Saul had taught everyone that. But the Lord saw this ruddy boy’s heart (v. 7) and recognized something from that of His own, and the rest is glorious history.
