March 28, 2024 Daily Dose of Discernment

Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner shall be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord. (1 Corinthians 11:27)

Today is Maundy Thursday (maundy comes from the word “mandate”), the day Jesus instituted the Lord’s Supper and commanded the apostles to memorialize it. They were mandated to make the offering of Christ on the cross ever present. That sacrifice that made all men one and reconciled them to God.

Paul says that as often as we eat the body of Christ and drink His blood in the Eucharist, we proclaim His death, the death that knit all men together. If there is any amount of hate or divisiveness or any intent to take advantage of our brother in our heart when we receive communion, we are no different than the Corinthians; we are partaking in an unworthy manner. Let us examine ourselves before we partake of the sacrament.
