Spiritual Food in Quarantine

Most translations render this verse in the future tense. But in the kingdom of God, things are “already but not yet.” Yes, we anticipate the coming of that kingdom in fullness, but at the same time, it’s also already here. And while we look forward to a glorious heavenly banquet, we can have a foretaste of it here and now.

The spies sent by Moses to the Promised Land came back to him in the desert with some of its produce. The Israelites got to sample the sublime richness of what God had prepared for them. It may seem like we’re in a wilderness right now but in the midst of it, we can taste and see the goodness of the Lord and what He has in store for us. Blessed indeed is he who not just will eat, but eats bread in the kingdom of God. There’s one privileged way we can do that. It’s called the Eucharist.
