“Crying Stones”
Luke 19: 40: “And Jesus answered and said, ‘I tell you, if these become silent, the stones will cry out.’” We must not reduce this verse to the simple message that if we don’t praise God, the rocks will. Jesus is referring to the prophecy of Habakkuk, “Surely the stones will cry out from the wall, and the rafter will answer it from the framework.” (Habakkuk 2: 11), which is a judgment upon those who are guilty of oppressive, careless, and presumptive government, the very opposite of the lesson learned from yesterday’s memo. Jesus’ message to the Pharisees is: When the righteous weak are silenced by the unrighteous strong, (as the Pharisees were famous for doing) the very stones cry out a message of judgment!
