“Go Against the Flow”

1 Corinthians 8: 4: “We know that there is no such thing as an idol in the world, and that there is no God but one.” It took a lot of guts for St. Paul to make this statement; in his Greco-Roman society there were dozens of gods vying for attention, and they all demanded far more sacrifices than Jehovah of the Jews ever even considered. As he says here, not everyone understood monotheism, and the trick was staying faithful to the one true Lord while not needlessly offending those yet unaware of the real situation. Still today, we must stay strong in our own faith while “dealing gently with the ignorant and misguided.” (Hebrews 5: 2)
