“Hope or Desperation?”
Luke 21: 3, 4: “Truly I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all of them; for they all out of their surplus put into the offering; but she out of her poverty put in all that she had to live on.” So was this the dear widow’s final act of desperation, or a declaration of hope? Jesus saw it as a proclamation that her hope lay beyond her situation, beyond her bottom line. It was the rich who, in seeking for “mo money,” were sowing in a desperate attempt to receive a bigger return. The widow gave more because, in reality, she had more; more of what really matters.
