“I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.” (Jn 10:11)

According to Jesus, the good shepherd lays down His life for His sheep. It would be highly unusual for a man to give his life for an animal because he is worth way more. How much more strange that God, who is of infinitely higher value than human beings, gives His life for them?

Many of the gods of other religions and legends are typically the kind who require sacrifices of animals, children or virgins before they grant mortal human beings a favor or relent on their wrath and violence. The stark difference with Christianity is that our God is peculiar - He gives His life for His creatures and always seeks their good with no strings attached. That’s just His nature. It’s called love. The only thing He wishes that we do is pay it forward, which itself is for our own good and that of His other children.
