April 22, 2024 Daily Dose of Discernment

Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to respond to everyone. (Colossians 4:6)

Somehow the idea of “righteous indignation” developed into a justified behavior in certain Christian circles, most probably based on a gross misunderstanding of who God is and what His words says. Consequently, fits of rage have been acceptable on the basis of verses such as those talking about being angry and not sinning.

As heralds of the good news of the kingdom of God, we should guard our tongues so that no harmful word would proceed out of our mouths but only what builds up so that it may graciously encourage those who hear us. According to Solomon, a soft answer turns away wrath, but grievous words stir up anger. We have the ability to control our speech because we have been given a spirit of power, love and discipline. Let us use it wisely and be good witnesses.
