August 19, 2022 Daily Dose of Discernment

“There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil.” (Job 2:3)

The Bible teaches us that if we obey God, we will be blessed. And it’s very true. Except in some cases. Like Job’s. Twice God Himself testifies that Job is a blameless man who reveres Him and turns away from evil. And yet several unthinkable tragedies happen to him in one fell swoop - he loses his wealth, his health and his children.

So why do bad things sometimes happen to good people, and good things happen to bad people? God, as with Job, doesn’t explain why, because the complexity of certain things is way over our head. Our finite human minds cannot fathom them. The universe which God runs has too many moving parts and our life is just one of them. What He does let us know, which we can understand, is that in Christ, as a man, He joins us in our “momentary, light affliction” and promises us an eternal weight of glory far beyond comparison to it. That hope does not disappoint and at the same time helps us endure.
