Holy Monday, March 25: “Trust in the Lord’s Joy”

Psalm 51: 8, 12: “Make me to hear joy and gladness, let the bones which You have broken rejoice. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation and sustain me with a willing spirit.”

For a brief moment David had rejected his trust in the Lord’s joy, and had fallen prey to the false joy that purports itself as ultimate fulfillment–adultery with a beautiful woman who just happens to be the wife of a close friend. Like all the devil’s promises, it proved empty, divisive, and destructive. But the gracious, loving God heard this sinner’s prayer, delivered him from bloodguiltiness, and David was once more joyfully singing of His Savior’s righteousness. That’s true joy!
