Palm Sunday, March 24: “Trust in the Lord’s Word”

Zechariah 9: 11b, 12a: “I have set your prisoners free from the waterless pit. Return to the stronghold, O prisoners who have the hope!”

Just as Jeremiah had been held captive in a dry well during the Babylonian siege of Jerusalem, at this time foreseen by Zechariah the nation of Israel was being imprisoned in the waterless pit of the Pharisees, who were giving the people dry, dead doctrine instead of the living water of the Word that Jesus brought. Even as they were plotting His demise (Luke 19: 47), that King rode into Jerusalem on a donkey (v. 9) endowed with salvation. The people who have the hope have been liberated; Hosannah!
