Spiritual Food in Quarantine

Jesus likened the kingdom of God to a mustard seed which a man took and threw into his own garden. It grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air nested in its branches.

The parable means that there will be no end to the increase of God’s kingdom. Matthew and Mark add that the mustard tree becomes bigger than the rest of the plants. But for what reason? So that it can provide a nesting place for birds and maybe also a shade for people who are weary. The purpose of the kingdom is not to boast about being large and in charge but so that its presence may bless the world - the poor hear the good news, the blind see, the oppressed are freed, and the favorable year of the Lord is proclaimed. That’s what we’re invited to participate in. What a privilege!
