Sunday, April 14: “Witness Causes Change”

Exodus 18: 11, 12: “[Jethro said] ‘Now I know that the Lord is greater than all the gods; indeed, it was proven when they dealt proudly against the people.’ Then Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, took a burnt offering and sacrifices for God, and Aaron came with all the elders of Israel to eat a meal with Moses’ father-in-law before God.”

This Jethro had been priest of Midian for at least forty years. We don’t know what god or gods the Midianites worshiped, but it wasn’t I AM (Exodus 3: 14) However, when he saw how the power of God was working for the Israelites through his son-in-law Moses, he immediately changed his God, His life, even his name! (Before, in Exodus 2: 18, he had been known as Reuel). Truly, a strong witness can cause change like little else.
