Tuesday, April 18: “Sanctified In, Not From”

John 17: 18, 19: “As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. For their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they themselves may also be sanctified in truth.”

We all know the summarized version of this passage: “In the world, but not of the world.” That’s accurate. The danger lies when we live as if being sanctified means to separate ourselves from those with whom we share the world. No, we separate from the practices of the world’s culture, but not from its practitioners. Why else would Jesus ask the Father to protect us from the power of the evil one (v. 15)? To be sanctified means to be holy; not holier than thou.
