“Twisted History”

Jonah 2: 3a; 4a: “For You had cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas … so I said, ‘I have been expelled from Your sight.’” Jonah had a funny way of remembering his story. Did God cast him into the sea? I thought it was the sailors, at Jonah’s insistence, who did that. And did God really expel Jonah from His sight? I thought Jonah was trying to run away from God’s presence. He even admitted as much to the sailors (Jonah 1: 10). Perhaps he is a lot like us, with selective memories that try to justify our actions and results. But if this describes you as well as Jonah, take heart; God still loved him, and you, and heard his cry for help. As Jonah himself said, He is ever merciful.
