“Wisdom over Dreams”

Ecclesiasticus 34: 7, 8: “For dreams have deceived many, and those who put their hope in them have failed. Without such deceptions the law will be fulfilled, and wisdom is made perfect in truthful lips.” A sobering thought, and one proven true many times over the centuries: Dreams are hazardous; not in and of themselves, but because they are brought forth by dreamers, who are all human beings. They, along with their followers, can begin to love and serve the dream more than God. Contrary to popular belief, God’s will can be fulfilled without dreams, as long as love, wisdom, and truth persist. And that, my friends, is a very painful lesson to learn. Shall we compare scars?

You see, the Kingdom of God is not a dream of the future, it is a present-day reality. Your role in it is not a dream, but a calling, a responsibility. Anything termed a “dream” or even “vision” which roots itself in the promotion or gratification of the dreamer and followers is subject to question. One can quote Proverbs 29: 18, “Without a vision the people perish,” but that term is better translated “revelation” or “understanding.” Yes, having a goal is good and proper; a game plan is irreplaceable. But dreams and visions, when given, are done so as directions to the goal, and are not the goal itself.
