Tuesday, April 23: “Earnestly Seeking Saltiness”

Matthew 5: 13a: You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again?

Salt is one of those abundantly rich spiritual metaphors that carry a wealth of meaning, but the most obvious (and powerful) is that salt makes you thirsty. And the more salt you ingest, the thirstier you get. Jesus’ point here, however, is that we are to be salt to others–our eagerness in the things of God is to make them thirsty for what we have. As St. Paul says, “Let your speech always be with grace, as though seasoned with salt.” (Colossians 4: 6) So get salty!
