Revelation 2: 6:“Yet this you do have, that you hate the deeds of the Nicolatians, which I also hate.” Who was this Nicolas, and why were his deeds so censured by Jesus Himself? Surprisingly, tradition tells us that he was the same Nicolas who, along with St. Stephen and five others (Acts 6: 5), was selected as one of the first seven deacons of the Church. What led him down his ungodly path of undisciplined licentiousness is unknown, but it does remind us to “take heed if you think you stand, lest you fall.” (1 Corinthians 10: 12)
