“More Excellent that Excellent”

1 Corinthians 12: 31b, 13: 1a: “I show you a still more excellent way. If I speak with the tongues of men and angels, but do not have love ….” What is more excellent than apostles, or prophets, or healings, or speaking with tongues? Only love. While the grammar may be questionable (you can’t trump a superlative), the theology is St. Paul at his finest: It doesn’t get any better than pure, focused, divine love. Actually, nothing else comes close.
